RETRO CHIQUE

Tore H. Bøe followed up his acclaimed cds Siesta and Zenography by recording a third more collagey album entitled Viscum Album, marking his move to another island as it was recorded in Trondheim and Arguineguín and intended for each side of an LP. Endgame is the full live recording from the last concert he ever did under that cameo, in Las Palmas 2003. These two works became sought after, only 22 copies of each was spread on cdr.

Both albums are now downloadable track-by-track or zipped with hi-res cd cover artwork from Ambolthue.

"Presenting sound collage where the focus is set on amplifying sounds that would otherwise pass unnoticed, and extensive use of room frequencies adding a certain resonnance that barely needs to be processed. Verving on the edge of feedback, his musical beauty is based in risk and chance. He might jump from extremely low soundscapes to potent sound collage in a glitch, or he might not."

The fingerspitzengefühl becomes the main instrument as the 'microphysical' side of his performances is what makes them rather unique. The positioning of sounds in a room. Often starting out with pure stereo recordings as a background he helps his objects of choice to tell their own stories.

The musical lingo is definitely varied, yet there is a distinct dialect present throughout his work. Most often found objects and dysfunctional devices create weird 'conversational' crackles, biips und kraaks. Memorabilia and trash is redefined into instruments (f.i. the home-made 'acoustic laptops' and later the Kurtstruments). Endless recordings are used as a palette for dynamic and contrastful brushstrokes. As Bøe has a background in various styles of music and as his inspiration is diverse to say the least, he is aiming at bringing music back to sound experimentation.

His usually temporary instrumental set-ups have included eggshell, hair, silver cutlery, 250V, rice, a bad knee, miked vinyls, a sahara sandstorm, stones, fire, paper, a passport, clocks, a hair dryer and a range of other broken electrical devices. His recorded tracks are all subtitled [opus for this + dat], a significant signature that reveals his tight connection to the long tradition of collage, dada, merz, fluxus, mail art, neoism, art naïve - yet the music is there for its own aesthetic value.

It has been on Bøe's agenda for years to seek out new spaces to fill, gaining contacts that come in the manifestation of friends. The emotional atmosphere of the room is crucial to the outcome of each concert. The venue might be a prestigous gallery, or a lower east side squat. The attitude and input remains the same, although the output might differ in context and complexity.

Bøe has played a long list of more or less known cities throughout Europe and the US, and ultimately being concluded in South Amerika october 2004, where Marhaug, Hegre and Courtis performed his music as another symbolic ego exchange leading into the two year private art process as or_/13051826.

In 2004 Bøe became Boe (like in Bo Diddley) as support act for 6 gigs by Einstürzende Neubauten, he then decided to dedicate his full artistic attention and efforts back into the Origami Republika, and he is now slowly buliding a new catalogue of intermedia art as or_/boe, and traceable a.o. with his wood laptops in or_/tacet, as anystylewilldo-dj in or_/kalima, doing retro-chique electro-noise in the or_/skandinavia duo.

By travelling around i have been privileged to meet so many nice and interesting people, and to be in direct contact with so many people who in turn seems to be tapped into the very nerve of creation, on so many levels, and not always in obvious ways. What a great native trans-nation. What talent. What kindness.

1. Stamps were placed directly on Tore H Bøe's minimalist 10" vinyl album Serum.
2. It was mailed to me without a cover, across the Atlantic.
3. I recorded the heavily scratched record as source for this track.
4. I added new stamps and mailed it again to a new listener.
I met Tore when he invited me to play at a gig he had in New York City. There he gave me a virgin copy of his record Serum and asked me to remix it for a compilation he was putting together. I quickly lost that copy but through the magic of the internet I was able to find a person in the UK willing to mail me his copy. His had already been mailed to him with no jacket, presumably from Tore in Norway. He glued stamps to it and mailed it to me, and in a separate package he sent a world map to track the travels of the record. After recording the vinyl, I added a new leg to the map's path and sent it to someone in California. Hopefully that record is still enjoying its journey through the world's postal systems.
Tore's Serum is very minimalistic, much of the time without any apparent sound. The rest of the time a single tone or rumbling, or rustling sound is apparent. In some cases I tried to clean up the record scratches in the sound, other times I kept or amplified them. This is a longer, different version of the "Spore" that will appear on Tore's compilation.
